Sesame is a flowering plant that belongs to the family Sesame and is also known as benne. It has one of the highest oil contents of any seed and offers a rich, nutty flavor, making it a popular ingredient in cuisines around the world. However, like other nuts, it can cause allergic reactions in some people. Sesame seeds are often added to breads, such as bagels and hamburger buns. They are also baked into cookies, often in the form of sticks. In Sicily and France, the seeds are eaten on bread (ficelle sésame), while in Greece they are used in cakes. Black sesame seeds are particularly known for their high antioxidant content and are rich in calcium, manganese, and copper.
