Flaxseeds
Flax (Linum usitatissimum), also known as common flax or linseed, is a member of the flax family (Linaceae). The plants are grown primarily for their seeds – they can be ground into flour or processed into linseed oil, which is widely used as a food supplement and as a wood finish. The sprouts of flaxseed are edible and have a slightly spicy taste. It is important to note that excessive consumption of flaxseed without adequate water intake can cause intestinal obstruction. In northern India, flaxseed is known as tisi or alsi – they are roasted, ground and eaten with boiled rice, a little water and salt.
